Kashmar Persian rugs are hand-woven in the city of Kashmar, in the province of Khorassan. The city is very old and has been known for its exquisite rugs for centuries. Kashmar rugs are produced by master weavers and are renowned for their beauty. They are easy to spot because of their unique design and large size. Kashmars usually depict the stories of important events in Persian history. There are often images of the ancient ruins and sculpture at Persepolis or the great Persian kings Daruis and Xerxes. Other Kashmar rugs resemble Kashans, with central medallions and spandrels.

Rug Size: Rug sizes are indicated in feet and do not include the fringes. Currently available are area rugs from 2x3 ft. up to 12x15 and runners from 6 ft. up to 25 ft.
Weaving: Classic rugs are hand-made (hand-woven, hand-knotted) by oriental - mostly persian (iranian) rug weavers. The techniques for weaving a hand-made rug have remained almost unchanged for two thousand years.
Material: Traditional rugs from Persian (today: Iran) are made with natural fibres like lamb wool, silk and cotton. Each strand is handknotted onto a fine cotton foundation. (The foundation is the material that makes up the base of the rug, comprised of crossed yarns that allow the pile to be knotted through it.) Some rugs are also made of pure wool.
Age: An approximation of when the carpet was woven. 0-10 years: new rug. 10-20 years: semi-old rug. 20-30 years: old rug. 30-40 years: semi-antique rug. Over 40 years: antique rug. In general, the older the rug, the more expensive it is.
